Transport / Fleet Manager
This challenging and exciting opportunity requires an experienced Transport / Fleet Manager with an extensive background within the construction industry, managing a wide variety of plant and equipment, and their safe function and efficient movement.
Due to an increase in contract awards, a significant forward order workload, and a dedication to continued profitable, ambitious and long-term growth across the UK, our client is now seeking to appoint a Transport – Fleet Manager.
Role Overview
Based in the company’s head offices just outside Scunthorpe, this is a dedicated “hands-on” role which requires a strong interface and alignment with Plant Fitters and Mechanics in the yard and Operations teams on multiple sites. The successful candidate will be required to manage and control the company’s transport, fleet and haulage activities, ensuring that plant, rigs and specialist construction equipment are fit for their set purpose, and reach their destination safely, on time and in the most cost-effective manner. Additionally, the role will identify and implement methods to improve logistical needs and analyse alternative transport management approaches and legal requirements regarding possible new methods to ensure compliance with government regulations. The successful candidate will need to assist the buying teams in the hiring and off hiring of plant and other pieces of equipment for site operations to run smoothly.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organise and manage the transport and fleet functions to determine the best routes, optimise drivers hours and implement the most productive delivery schedules, whilst ensuring adherence to all company requirements and standards
- Lead a close knit team of Fitters and Mechanics to ensure they repair, service and maintain the company’s fleet of specialist construction plant and equipment, as well as the HGV’s required for their transportation
- Work closely with the internal operations team in order to fulfil the contractual commitments of projects in the most cost effective and efficient manner
- Ensure suppliers are managed in accordance with agreed SLA’s and with the best terms of service, and when necessary, undertake appropriate benchmarking exercises to monitor and maintain value for money and quality
- Conduct investigations in accordance with legislation and the company’s HSE policy to determine causes of any transportation accidents and improve safety procedures if required
- Analyse expenditures and other financial information in order to provide feedback to consider process improvement plans, policies, and budgets for increasing operational efficiency in relation to the transportation and fleet function
- Recommend or authorise expenditure (to an agreed level) to procure relevant materials in order to increase the efficiency and service quality of the transport and fleet function
- To ensure adequate cover is provided in the absence of any crews so that operations are not compromised
- Manage and co-ordinate training requirements in order to ensure operational compliancy
- Support the Operations Manager to determine priorities and allocate work to maximise output and efficiency
- Ensure personal and team adherence to existing working practices, methods and procedures, undertaking relevant training and development activities as required
The Person
- A good understanding of construction related transport and fleet regulations, to help support the company’s requirements in these areas
- A good understanding of transport regulations and supporting the company’s licence requirements
- Ideally fully up to date with the latest FORS regulations and “O” Licence Certified / Trained
- Sufficient knowledge of QA systems, in order that implementation of relevant processes and procedures can be managed appropriately
- Strong organisational skills for your team’s workload, as well as planning workloads, and schedules and journeys to multiple sites UK wide
- Ability to work flexibly and make decisions quickly
- Good communicator and the ability to work with people of all levels
- Computer literacy relative to the requirements of the role
- Good leadership and motivational skills
