Client Description:

Our client is a specialist in the design, supply and installation of all forms of geotechncial engineering, piling and ground engineering techniques. They are vastly experienced in delivering innovative piling and foundations solutions for a wide range of sectors and clients, including industrial, commercial and residential, with additional works such as permanent steel, sheet piled basements, retaining walls, temporary works and bracing for the rail, road, infrastructure and ports and harbours arena.

Job Description:

This challenging and exciting opportunity, requires an individual with a strong technical background and demonstrable experience in the design production and leadership of projects within the foundations, piling, temporary and permanent works, geotechnical and ground engineering sectors.


Our client owns and operates a vast fleet of highly specialised and state of the art rigs, equipment, plant and machinery. The delivery of high quality solutions and providing excellent value to clients are central to the company's mission, vision and values, and is seen as critical to the continued success of the business.


Due to continued expansion, an abundant pipeline of works, and the recent award of a number of long term / major contracts, our client is now looking to appoint a Design Manager to plan, prioritise and manage all design works and teams for the company, covering the areas of geotechnical, ground engineering, foundations, piling and temporary works. You will be responsible for ensuring technical excellence and governance on all design matters pertaining to work winning and contract technical issues for the company. You will provide guidance to other members of the team, and Directors and Managers on all aspects relating to design activity.

The Role

  • Managing the company’s design workload to ensure that the needs of the work winning and operational functions are met in a timely manner, in order to ultimately meet clients’ requirements and company business objectives

  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with relevant industry regulations and standards, and in keeping with both company requirements and client specifications

  • Manage and advise on the technical design elements of all piling, foundations and temporary works projects

  • Provide technical support for the contract delivery teams with current or potential clients

  • Ensuring that you play an active part in keeping appropriately motivated to deliver high quality design solutions for the business and its clients

  • To produce high quality material, right first time, by identifying process constraints and improvements which can impact on quality, and regularly update all involved teams to ensure timescales are achievable without compromising quality

  • Actively promote and demonstrate the group’s core values at all times

  • Leading the design team to assist in the submission of winning and highly focussed, competitive tenders, bids and proposals

  • Prepare regular reports on departmental performance to assist in decision making

  • Hold regular review meetings with the relevant management teams, developing a pro-active focus upon client expectations and contract delivery

  • Co-ordinate and add value at the pre, in-situ and post contract stage of projects

  • To hold regular progress meetings for presentation to the relevant management

  • To ensure that any new strategies and initiatives match expectations, and constantly seek to promote these for the benefit for the company and tailor them to meet the relevant company and client needs

  • Be an integral senior member of the business to ensure that morale is maintained to the highest level at all times

  • Ensure that all proposals and submissions adhere to relevant company policies and business objectives, and are compliant with legal requirements and best practice procedures

  • Take responsibility for meeting your own business targets, controls and operating costs in achieving investment plans, managing risks effectively and delivering all agreed outputs, within the company ideals

  • To ensure that any issues on-going as a result of any improvement or change initiatives are managed effectively to the requirement of company procedure and remain of prime importance

  • To ensure a high level of team-work and cohesion between staff is maintained at all times

  • To liaise with the relevant managers within the company with regard to operating policy


    The Person


  • This is a key role for an individual with the requirement of up to date technical design knowledge of foundations, piling, temporary and permanent works, and general geotechnical and ground engineering industry best practice

  • You will possess experience in managing designs and the team’s activities relating to all types of the aforementioned disciplines

  • You will be both focused and thorough, and possess the gravitas and professional credibility to advise senior management when action is required, together with the tenacity and drive to ensure that the necessary plans are taken

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners and delivery team members under time pressure

  • Client centric and flexible in your approach, you will possess the strategic and creative insight to understand the full range of opportunities contained within invitations to tender and be willing to challenge the norm

  • You will know what good looks like for all submissions, and have hands on experience in supporting and advising on the technical and design aspects of contracts in a timely manner
